In the mid sixties, East Leonard Christian Reformed Church started a ministry in the Coit/Belknap community called Livingston Chapel. Livingston Chapel initially started as a part time drop in center and a team of East Leonard volunteers would engage in door to door evangelism promoting the center and the gospel. After a while, Livingston Chapel began running Cadet and Calvinettes meetings and holding Sunday morning services. By 1975, rent costs had grown too high for Livingston Chapel and rather than discontinuing the ministry they sought to partner with Epworth United Methodist Church, a church that had been in existence in the same neighborhood since 1895. Epworth's congregation was declining as many of its members were attending another nearby Methodist Church. Livingston Chapel came in to help with their Sunday School program, teach mid week programs such as Cadets and reached out to the community through evangelism. In 1977, Epworth voted to disband and sell the property to Livingston Chapel, which changed the name to Coit Community Christian Reformed Church. The church was then under the leadership of Pastor Pete Kooreman for about ten years. The church grew to approximately 100 in membership, but people eventually started moving out of the community. By the time Pastor Henry Perez came in 1990, there were few members left. Henry Perez started a new chapter for Coit. Henry mentored both Pastors John Bergsma and current Coit pastor, Jerome Burton, before leaving in 1994. In 1997, Jerome Burton was ordained as an evangelist for Classis Grand Rapids North of the Christian Reformed Church. In 1999, John Bergsma left after completing Calvin Theological Seminary. Jerome Burton went on to be ordained as a minister of the Word and is now the senior pastor of the church.
